Coburg Crossings Cafe: a review

Way back in the day, I moved up to Flagstaff to be with Addicus while he attended NAU. That’s where we found Mike and Rhonda’s and forevermore cemented our love of local eateries. Because of the Navy, we have been able to find ‘local’ spots in a variety of places. Our Eugene favorite? Coburg Crossing Cafe. Found right off the 199 exit, it’s actually a truck stop. Don't let that fool you! While truck stops are notorious for subpar food and sad dining company, Coburg Crossings is anything but!

We first stopped there because another establishment was closed and we needed a near by option as three kids were going to be eating their seatbelts, if not fed soon. That first trip, #MoonSeeker ordered pasta… I expected a glorified Chef Boyarde. It arrived and visually confirmed my suspicion. It looked, ok. As kids were changing minds and passing meals around like thanksgiving dinner dishes to share, I snagged a bite for myself. MAN! was I wrong. It was delicious. I then stole a bite of every pasta plate that was passed by me.

Oatmeal fixin’s, and kids pancake… big. (what #WestWind ordered most recently) Then! the older two ordered pancakes to share. One wanted strawberries and the other did not. As we tried to reconcile their order discrepancy, the waitress said ‘I can do that’. We shrugged a thank you and continued ordering. The pancakes that came, were split into two plates. Now, this may not seem like a big deal to you folks with no kids… but to the rest of us? It was like the clouds parted and a heavenly light shone down on that waitress. (I heard angels singing… actual angels). One pancake plate had strawberries slathered over it. The other had a side of syrup. No one ended up liking the strawberry drizzle, which is where the great passing of plates started.

Be sure to check the Special on your way in.

I cant even remember what Addicus and I had that first trip. But no matter. Most recently, he and I shared this beast of a meal. We usually share the Chicken Fried Steak, cause it’s ginormous.

This was a half order of the steak to go with the breakfast special on Sundays. We STILL shared it and it left us with just enough room for pie! We’ve been back almost every other week for several months now. We find it a great end to a day of adventuring. While driving home I’ll ask ‘what about dinner?’, Addicus will say ‘Coburg?’ and that's that. The back seat erupts in cheers and we set course. Do you know what a blessing it is to have a restaurant that everyone in our family loves? A big one. We love it so much that we ate there for thanksgiving this year. With no extra visitors to entertain, we took the day for adventuring knowing full well, that it would end in dinner at Coburg. We also ate Xmoose dinner there. This year we shifted Xmoose morning celebrations to the Solstice (click to read about that adventure), so Xmoose day? was free for adventuring.

The staff are always so very friendly and accommodating. A true ‘get it your way’ kind of place. And I haven't even mentioned dessert! Get the apple pie. Trust me, totally worth it. And! Get it as your

appetizer. They make a limited number, once they run out, the cook makes another batch the next day. I’ve learned that if they have it… I get it first. Because twice, they ran out while I was eating! In the immortal words of Stephanie Tanner… How Rude. What’s your favorite local spot? Here in Eugene or otherwise. Let us know and help grow our list of places to try. Taps, taps. Lights out.
